I was reminded a few times when a character I couldn’t quite remember from the first game popped up. It’s a great system in place and the game does very well to explain things to newcomers or experienced players that may have forgotten things. Fear not if you’re playing for the first time or don’t have a file to transfer over, the game presents you with a choice to make on who will be the main character, then the game changes based on which character out of two you decide to go with.

The Banner Saga 2 takes place a few weeks after the events of the first game, if you’ve played the PC version of the first game you can import your saved file and with it all your choices and characters that survived. I’ve played the first four chapters of The Banner Saga 2 and these are my first impressions of the game. Now the trio at Stoic Studio, all formerly developers at Bioware, have finished part two of the saga, which release’s for PC on April 19th and they were kind enough to let me preview the game. The Banner Saga is a three-part game series, part one of Stoic Studio’s Viking themed tactical role-playing game first released in January 2014 for PC and Mobile devices, and again earlier this year for PS4 and Xbox One. The art is primarily hand-drawn animation sequences.The Banner Saga continues, and the marvellous engaging story and beautifully crafted world returns. The game is to be set in a Viking-inspired fantasy setting, with a visual style influeced by Eyvind Earle's art for the 1959 Disney film, Sleeping Beauty, as well as the works of Ralph Bakshi and Don Bluth. Stoic has said that there is still no permadeath for the characters in Banner Saga 2, so these tactics make the battle harder but will not rob players of the main characters. Having players now come from off the main board is a big change from the previous version of the game. Banner Saga games don’t include a “Fog of War” feature, so players can see exactly where all the enemies are on the board. This will call for more strategic decisions when it comes to where players move their forces on the battlefield grid. There are said to be new enemies including support units and four-legged creatures with new abilities that can actually come from off screen in the heat of a battle. As in the other game, there are said to be choices based on whether or not you will go into combat or try and go around an area that has seen the Dredge attack or get near. Sometimes the choices are who you want to take into battle and other times it’s about deciding when your party is going to break camp.
On top of that combat style, there is a separate “Choose Your Own Adventure” laid on top.
This means the basic game play is a mix of turn-based and grid-based combat. The basic aspects of Banner Saga 2 gameplay will be similar to what we saw in Banner Saga.

Windows and OS X versions were released on April 19, 2016, and PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in July 2016. Initially, the game was scheduled to be released for the Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2015. The game was announced at the The Game Awards on December 5, 2014. The Banner Saga 2 is developed by three-man indie development team Stoic.
